Overberg Series
2021 – 2025

For ten years, the Overberg landscape around Stanford was my home and studio. This series of oil paintings captures that period of deep immersion, exploring the singular character of a place defined by its lush river environs, rolling farmlands, and the ever-present frame of the Kleinriviersberge. I was drawn to its quiet, rural rhythms and especially to the remarkable quality of light that bathes the region.
My connection deepened through the practice of painting itself, mostly outdoors, directly engaging with the elements. Translating this experience involved expressive, painterly brushstrokes using oil paint and cold wax medium, often relying on a limited palette to distill the essence of light and form. Looking back, this Overberg Series stands as a visual testament to a decade of observation, connection, and the attempt to capture the spirit of a place that profoundly shaped my work.
