2021… what on earth was that?
It’s been a beast of a year! But that’s not what I’m going to reflect on here.
There have been silver linings, and I have much to be grateful for.
I’m happy to report that art sales were up this year compared to last year. Fingers crossed that the positive trajectory continues and life settles down again into a sustainable rhythm. 🤞
What art happened
I haven’t made that much art in 2021, but I have made some major inroads into new skills, mediums and experimentation.
Over the course of 2021 I have transitioned from painting mostly flowers in acrylic to painting mostly landscapes in oils.
The starting point to these changes was a beautiful morning in fellow artist Sara Abbott’s garden in Stanford. Inspired by the Wilde Dagga, or Lion’s Ear (Leonotis leonurus) growing there, and playing with a little packet of Reeves water soluble oils and a palette knife, something clicked.

I’ve ditched the water soluble oils and switched to Zelcol oils, and experimented with different mediums and techniques.
Also keen to spend more time outdoors, I have resumed plein air painting whenever I can.
I’m particularly in love with this iconic Stanford view.
